Welcome!

Me Henry.jpeg

Hello! My name is Stephanie Hoos, and I've been tutoring in New York and Connecticut since 2011. I offer in-person as well as online tutoring sessions. My primary focus is Language Arts and English Literature, but I also have experience with all levels of mathematics and science as well as test preparation and executive functioning strategies. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding my capabilities with a particular subject.

I'm originally from Woodbridge, CT and graduated from Hopkins School in 2005, Connecticut College (B.A. in English) in 2009, City Year New York in 2010, and from Teachers College: Columbia University (M.A. in Teaching of English) in 2012.

I taught Language Arts at The Windward School in White Plains from 2012 to 2017 and Middle School English at King School in Stamford from 2017 to 2022. I’ve relocated back to my home town of New Haven to serve my community as an English Language Arts instructor for the ACES School Network.

I’m extremely passionate about literature, dance, comic books, community service, and civic engagement. If you're interested in having me support your student, please use the contact form at the bottom of this page. I look forward to meeting you!

Testimonials

"We have used several tutors for our son . We have been so pleased with the positive outcomes that Stephanie has accomplished with our son who suffers with ADHD and Dyslexia. His reading, writing and confidence levels all improved. He was happy, too. She has a lot of patience, knowledge and experience. I truly highly recommend her expertise."

(Mom of D.R. - 6th grade)

"I honestly don't know where we would be without Stephanie. She is flexible, creative, genuine, understanding, and the most hardworking person on our team to support my daughter. I feel incredibly relaxed and confident knowing that [my daughter] has Stephanie each week to work with on every subject and get her organized for the week ahead of her."

(Mom of A.B. - 10th grade)

"Our family has worked with Stephanie since 2014. She began as a homework helper, but she quickly became so much more. We assumed she would work with our older son until his graduation, but our daughter wanted to work with her as soon as she went into high school! It's become a whole family project, and Stephanie has been integral to our son and daughter's success. My son will attend Georgetown this upcoming fall (Stephanie helped with his applications and essays) and my daughter will begin the application process soon. Stephanie is an excellent tutor. She's a find!"

(Dad of G.D. and B.D. - freshman in college and 11th grade)

"An incredible asset to our family. I feel like we found the best of the best."

(Dad of J.L. - 8th grade)

"If you're looking for someone who can tutor anyone in anything, Stephanie is the right person. We've loved having her become a part of our schedule and a part of our family."

(Mom of S.B. - 7th grade)

Billing & Cancellations

First Meeting: Your initial consultation is free of charge. After your initial consultation, you will receive a Cancellation Policy document from me with the information contained on this page. That document must be signed and mailed to me (address will be provided to you at your consultation) at least 24 hours before your first scheduled session with your student.

Hourly Rate: I account for every session hourly. Payment is due at the time of each session or at the end of a week that consists of multiple sessions. Advanced payments are to be discussed on a case by case basis. Fees are subject to change, depending on commute, outside lesson planning, and one on one time with your student. I do not charge consultation fees or referral fees of any kind.

Location: Clients may opt to meet in a predetermined public location (library or coffee shop, for example) or host in their family home. This decision does not have any impact on billing or cancellations, with the exception of a commute time longer than 30 minutes to the desired location. All I ask is that we have an open dialogue about a meeting location that suits us both.

Cancellation: A full session fee is charged for all missed appointments or cancellations with less than 24-hours notice (unless due to illness or emergency; life happens!). If three sessions in a row are cancelled, I will open that reserved space. If payment is not arranged per session, I will send an invoice via email that will account for time spent and associated billing. If I cancel an appointment for any reason, I will not charge for it.
